The tire tread thickness is measured in 32nds of an inch. The new tires come from 9/32″ to 11/32″ of tread material. The tire is deemed dangerous when the tread is worn down to 2/32″ (1.5 mm).

Should you wait till your tires become dangerous or replace them earlier?
In our experience, you will begin noticing slipping on wet or slick streets as soon as your tires are worn down to approximately 4/32″ (3.2 mm). It’s at this stage you should begin looking for new tires.
For winter tires, then alter them even earlier. Together with 4/32″ of the tread remaining, winter tires are essentially useless in snowy or icy conditions.
